And Jessica is a registered dietitian and passionate wellness encourager who believes in a forever approach to living well.

She is the founder and CEO of Nourished by Nutrition, her nutrition coaching business and wellness website.

Yes, let's do it. So the first question I had, which is to hear a little bit more about your CEO story and what led you to start your business.

Jessica Bippen 01:38

Sure. So Nourished by Nutrition actually just started out as a blog back when I was in my undergraduate courses at St. Louis University about four years ago. I was studying nutrition and dietetics.

But to be completely honest, I did not have that great of a relationship with food or my body. But honestly, that could probably be a whole other podcast in and of itself.

So at that time, nurse brain nutrition was merely just a way for me to share my recipes and connect with others.

So as I went on, I went into my dietetic internship and I studied a more in depth approach to nutrition and the protocols of how diseases and foods interact.

But I saw this huge disconnect with what I was learning and then the definition of health and wellness that really encompasses more than just food and exercise.

I truly believe in this more holistic approach to nutrition and health. And after seeing just so many sickness people, a lot of which was preventable, it made me realize that that's not what I wanted to do.

I promised myself I would never work in a clinical setting and that I would work for myself and do something that I loved.

So my goal was, and it still is, to focus on this whole person approach to wellness. And I do this by really focusing on individualized nutrition and a whole person approach which helps create this lifestyle that's forever or sustainable.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. And always you want to take actions that you can always kind of continue on with your life instead of just doing these sometimes fad diets and things like that, which are unsustainable in terms of.

Jessica Bippen 03:35

Yes, exactly.

So these past three years, after I've been out of my dietetic internship and I graduated with my master's degree, this is like the time that I've really spent focusing on nourishment, nutrition and growing it from a blog into a business and a brand.

Awesome. Yeah, I love that. And I love going crazy for blogs. So I'm a big blogger. I love blogs. And it's funny, when I first started doing blogging myself, I wasn't what I considered an entrepreneur or business owner, I was just interested in it.

But like, you were talking about how, as you, I guess, started writing articles, as you started to connect with people, you started to become you.

And then also you started to develop a business and everything. You did your internship and your studies as a result of it.

Exactly.

Yeah. Absolutely love that story. So I'm super biased on blogging, but I absolutely love that story. So I know you touched on it a little bit.

So could you tell us, I guess, a little bit more on like how you help the clients that you work with?

Jessica Bippen 04:27

Sure. So I right now provide a three or a six month nutrition coaching package. And this is where I go deep with my clients.

That's why I don't have just a one time session or like introductory session, and then if you want, you can have follow ups.

I really promote this nutrition coaching package because I help them create what I said before, this idea of forever wellness, this sustainable lifestyle that helps them become the healthiest version of themselves.

But aside from that, I also do a lot of brand collaborations and freelance nutrition and writing projects.

I'm a ghostwriter of meal plans for a celebrity fitness influencer. I'm in the early stages of becoming a book author and I, I regularly collaborate with companies for nutrition articles and recipe development.

Nice. I love that. And I love the fact that you have your business and then you're also finding other opportunities to kind of help support people, but do it in different ways.

But it's all in alignment with your overall brand and what it is that you're doing. It sounds like.

Exactly. I like to have my hand in a lot of different areas. It keeps the creativity going and it's fun.

Gresham Harkless 05:48

Yeah, me and you both, I completely understand that. I'm looking on that as well. So now I wanted to ask you for what I call your secret sauce.

So this is what you feel kind of distinguishes you or your organization, kind of sets you apart. So do you have an example you can share with us?

Jessica Bippen 06:01

Yeah. So there's two things that I really think that is kind of my unique selling point. Which one is this idea that wellness is a lifestyle.

So I'm not some dietitian who's going to focus on some trendy diet or an ingredient or an exercise program.

My approach really is unique in that it focuses on this whole person approach to wellness, and it encompasses what I like to call the eight elements of nourished living.

So these are nourishment, which is your food, and hydration. Then there's movement, rest, self care, stress management, relationships, mindset and purpose.

While there is a large emphasis, obviously, on nourishing your body with whole foods and proper nutrition, these other elements really play a crucial role in achieving optimal health and finding a balance in life.

And then also when it comes to nourish my nutrition, I am the face of my brand. So it really comes down to relatability and sharing my story.

I mean, I've been through the struggle of having an unhealthy relationship with food, body image, and ultimately living in this constant state of imbalance.

So I think this makes me, as the face of nourished brand nutrition, a relatable brand and business.

Gresham Harkless 07:29

Yeah, absolutely. And I think that by you, of course, telling your story, it also helps out because people become connected to those stories because they can see themselves in you and vice versa.

It kind of sounds like because if they're going through difficulty, sometimes you think you're by yourself and you don't have anybody to lean on, but if you have somebody that's gone through something similar, you can kind of get that attraction.

Jessica Bippen 07:47

Oh, my gosh. Exactly. That's actually one of the biggest turning points I've seen in my brand and business is especially when I was transitioning from a blog to more of like, this wellness and lifestyle brand.

Like having more photos of me and really getting deep and sharing my story, there was this significant, like, engagement rate, turnover.

Like, I had so much more of engagement when you start to share those stories and when people can see the face behind the brand more than just, oh, she shares a lot of recipes or she talks about nutrition topics, like when they see the person there.

And can see and hear this relatable story and put themselves in your shoes, it kind of makes them feel more connected to you and to your brand. So I think that's been really helpful.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense because, people love stories and especially it makes you, like you said, more relatable.

Makes you human as well, too, which always is important. And then you have the opportunity to kind of build that relationship and build that connection.

And then not only are you the person that provided the recipe, provided all that great insight, but you have, such a powerful story that people can connect to you and they also kind of, like you said, can see themselves walking down the path that you have as well.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. And now I wanted to switch gears a little bit and ask you for what I call a CEO hack.

And this might be an app, a book, or a habit that you have, but it's something that makes you more effective and efficient as a business owner.

Okay. Oh, my gosh. 100% my morning routine.

This is my top business and in general life hack. Like, for me, waking up in the morning and having that time for myself, which I call my me time, it just allows me to start off the day on a positive note and just ease into the day. I am like the sharpest in the morning.

So I'll practice gratitude and start writing in my journal, which typically turns into blog content. And then I'll have breakfast and get a early morning workout in before I officially start my work day.

Awesome, awesome. Yeah, awesome. Yeah, I love that. And I always say to myself, in order to win the day, you have to win the morning.

So if I can win the morning, then that's going to help me propel my day more than likely than not in the right way. So it's great to hear that you have that same experience.

Oh, I love that saying. Yes, I totally agree with you.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. And now I wanted to ask you for what I call a CEO nugget.

And a CEO nugget can be a word of wisdom or a piece of advice, or if you can hop into a time machine, what would you tell your younger business self?

Jessica Bippen 10:20

Sure. So this one's hard. It is. Beware of perfection paralysis. So this is something I still struggle with on most days as an entrepreneur.

And I think a lot of business owners do since we're all very type a. Typically, I think business owners have this unwavering drive, but also perfectionist tendencies.

When you're a business owner, you're putting your whole heart and soul into creating and your services.

And it's hard not to want to be perfect. But the reality is like, perfection doesn't exist and sometimes done is better than perfect.

I mean, we spend so much time creating and tweaking, but you can only know what your buyer really wants or what they're going to think of a product or service until you've really tested the waters with them, you can always get feedback and improve.

But I mean, this requires you putting something out there and not worrying about it being perfect the first time around.

Gresham Harkless 11:24

Absolutely. That makes perfect sense. Yeah, I agree with that. I love the saying done is better than perfect because a lot of times, you want to make sure you have that high bar and you are striving for excellence.

But you also want to make sure that you still are moving forward and you're not getting caught. I not doing anything. You're still taking some type of action towards that goal.

And it's hard.

Yes, it is. To find that balance.

Yes.

Yeah. So it's always a struggle, like you said, for most type a slash entrepreneurial type people that are super driven to try to take over the world, that you sometimes have to realize that it doesn't have to be perfect. And you can always improve, but at the same time, you want to make sure that you're moving forward.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. And now I wanted to ask you for my absolute favorite question, which is the definition for being a CEO.

And we're hoping to have different quote-unquote CEO's on this show and looking at what entrepreneurship, business and being a CEO actually means.

So, Jessica, I wanted to ask you, what does being a CEO mean to you?

Jessica Bippen 12:14

Yeah. So being a CEO really means paving my own way and following my dreams. It means taking my passion, what lights my soul on fire, which is helping others discover their forever wellness, and it's figuring out how to make a living out of it.

Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Love that. It's like I always say, like, you're kind of like an artist and you're painting your masterpiece and your masterpiece happens to be your life or your business or whatever it is that you're doing.

But you're painting whatever you're looking for and you're creating that future that you want. So I love that definition.

And we're hoping to have different quote unquote CEO's on this show and looking at what entrepreneurship, business and being a CEO actually means. So, Jessica, I wanted to ask you, what does being a CEO mean to you?

Yeah. So being a CEO really means paving my own way and following my dreams. It means taking my passion, you know, what lights my soul on fire, which is helping others discover their forever wellness, and it's figuring out how to make a living out of it.

Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Love that. It's like I always say, like, you're kind of like an artist and you're painting your masterpiece and your masterpiece happens to be your life or your business or whatever it is that you're doing, but you're painting whatever you're looking for and you're creating that future that you want.
