Gresham Harkless 0:27

Hello, hello. Hello, this is Gresh from the I AM CEO podcast and I have two very special guests on the show today. I have Kim and Kalee of Sorey Fitness. Kim and Kalee, it's awesome to have you on the show.

Kim & Kalee Sorey 0:39

Thank you for having us. Hey,

Gresham Harkless 0:40

No problem. No problem. Well, what I wanted to do was just read a little bit about Kim and Kaylee so you can hear about all the awesome things that they're doing.

Kim and Kaylee are a mother-daughter team focused on simplifying healthy living. They are also elite independent Beachbody coaches. Their mission is to help women build a healthy body and a balanced life and they provide tips to make health easy through at-home workouts, a balanced diet, and self-care. Finally, they have helped over 4100 clients start an at-home workout and nutrition plans since 2011.

Kim and Kalee are you ready to speak to the I AM CEO community?

Kim & Kalee Sorey 1:14

Yes, already. I am also ready.

Gresham Harkless 1:17

Awesome. Well, the first question that I have is usually just to hear a little bit more about your CEO story. Tell us a little bit about your background and what led you guys to start your business.

[restrict paid=”true”]

Kim & Kalee Sorey 1:26

Okay, sounds good. Kalee, I'll take this one. This is Kim ready to get started. I guess it was back in 2011. I had always been into fitness working out at home. I don't know if any of the listeners remember Richard Simmons at 10 o'clock in the morning on NBC. I was doing those workouts and I graduated to like Denise Austin, and Tammy Lee Webb and then doing VHS workouts at home. So I always have loved those kinds of workouts. And then she and I talked about it. But we really wanted to research it, we were kind of, do we want to commit to this?

Then I went to a support group with a friend who was considering having a gastric sleeve. I was sitting around the group and listening to their answers and thinking, you know what I know these answers. I could actually help these people because there were things that I took for granted that I thought everybody else knew. But these people were seeking help, didn't know. So I came home and I talked to Kalee about it. It was a really hard time for us to even think about opening a business because we had just filed for bankruptcy and lost our home. We were literally living in a friend's home for free at that time.

So it was kind of nerve-wracking, do we do this, but we both felt like we could make a difference. We believed that we can make this business work. So that's how we got started. When we started, it was to help others and we also wanted to make a little money to help us out of that bankruptcy.

Gresham Harkless 3:06

Awesome. Well, that's obviously a hard experience to kind of go through. But you guys showed a lot of, I guess, a ability to be able to just kind of look at what was going on and be able to kind of move forward anyways. That's something that you know, every entrepreneur and business owner can kind of learn from.

So I want to ask you a little bit more about your business, can you tell us a little bit more about like how exactly you serve your clients that you work with?

Kim & Kalee Sorey 3:30

Sure, this is Kalee. So we really try to make healthy living as simple as possible because we know our clients are super busy. They're usually moms, they're usually working. They're a career person, we know all of our clients have a busy life. So we try to make it super simple. So that's all we focus on at-home workouts and just a really practical approach to nutrition. We keep it really simple either with tracking or simple macros.

The biggest thing is that we offer accountability because it can feel kind of overwhelming and kind of like you're by yourself when you start a weight loss program or you just hit that bottom of not feeling confident. So we really want to focus on that accountability and support. We offer monthly challenges as well as a year-round accountability group to kind of help people through that adjustment and figure out what's going to work for them and empower them to help them hit their goals.

Gresham Harkless 4:27

Awesome. That's huge and like you mentioned now the old Richard Simmons videos, you had the opportunity to watch them but you didn't have that accountability sometimes to make sure you were actually doing the workout so the fact that you guys can combine the both of them kind of makes for something pretty awesome that you guys are doing.

Kim & Kalee Sorey 4:42

Yeah.

Gresham Harkless 4:43

Cool. Well, um, what I usually ask for next is kind of like a quote and quote, your secret sauce or kind of like what you feel makes your organization your business unique from other businesses.

Kim & Kalee Sorey 4:52

Well, this is Kim again, this one we kind of have a little benefit here. I think what makes us unique is that we are mother-daughter. And if the viewers or the listeners go to our site, you can see that we look an awful lot alike. So that helps to make that part of the business unique. But the nitty gritty part that makes us unique, is we relate really well to our clients. We've been there, we've done that, we've struggled with our way, we found what works.

Our target markets, keep things real, we are an 80-20 mother-daughter kind of duo, we eat healthy 80% of the time, and we have our treats 20% of the time. I think a lot of our clients really relate to that and appreciate it that we have our ups and downs, we stay on track, but then we allow ourselves a treat. So I think that's part of what makes us so special, we can really understand where they're coming from.

I went there to Moundsville, and I lost 20 pounds after recovering from illness. So yeah, we can get there with them. Kalee, did you have a secret sauce? So I totally agree. I think just the fact that we've been able to do this, like, I'm able to show people what fitness looks like in their 20s and then she's able to show fitness at a later age. I think that's really neat because we're able to attract people in their 20s, their 30s, their 40s or 50s. And so we can show that it's never too early or too late to get healthy and fit. Right.

Gresham Harkless 6:24

Exactly, yeah and that's a huge thing. Because a lot of people that want to take care of their fitness and their health kind of don't think about it long term. But you guys have an ability to kind of touch it from different from each of those paradigms. Each of those experiences that you're going through kind of helps out. So somebody can talk to you and say, hey, you've actually gone through it. Or you maybe can talk to your daughter if you're a little bit younger. So whatever it is to kind of help reach whatever those fitness goals might be.

Kim & Kalee Sorey 6:49

Right.

Gresham Harkless 6:50

Awesome. So one of the things that I get to do and I'm excited about doing is getting the opportunity to ask for what I call a CEO hack. This might be an app, might be a book, or it's just kind of like a resource or something that you do that makes you more efficient and effective. As business owners, do you guys have some CEO hacks you can throw at us?

Kim & Kalee Sorey 7:06

My favorite, If you have not downloaded Audible, you have to have Audible because it makes listening to books so easy. I've probably listened to probably 10 this year just because you can easily put it on. When you're walking on a treadmill or you're putting on your makeup, you're taking a shower, whatever. You have some downtime, listening to a book can only help and one of my favorites is a classic Jim Roan's, Art of Exceptional Living. I listened to it dozens of times.

Then a new favorite is Rachel Hollis's Girl Wash your Face. That's been a huge hit with our team that we help and they just really connected with it. I agree. I like Audibles. I mean, I live by Audibles. That's how I get my personal development. It's perfect. A perfect book that I've been listening to is, I'm a little embarrassed to say it, but I shouldn't be but it's I just remember, it's Badass by Jensen.

Gresham Harkless 8:02

You're a badass.

Kim & Kalee Sorey 8:03
Yeah, you are badass. Just remember the bad word.

Gresham Harkless 8:06

And that's the important part.

Kim & Kalee Sorey 8:10

The important part, I love that book. I listened to it on Audibles. It's just a great book, I think everybody should let you know, read it or listen to it also like Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. So those are two of a couple of my favorite books and the hack that I like is my passion planner. For CEO you well, at least me I have to be organized.

My passion planner is very blocked out into times and a calendar so I can plan out my day and plan out my month. That helps me stay organized and hit all the tasks I need to hit for the day and for the month.

Gresham Harkless 8:44

Yeah, those are obviously some great books to definitely pick up and we'll definitely make sure to share those. But yeah, Audible is definitely a key to making them even listen to it on to 2x speed. So if you have a quick computer, you're doing a quick run, maybe instead of a walk, you can still listen and get as much information as possible. That's always a great hex to kind of listen to and pay attention to.

I wanted to ask you more about what I call a CEO nugget. So this might be like a word of wisdom or a piece of advice that you guys might have for other entrepreneurs and business owners.

Kim & Kalee Sorey 9:13

I think the biggest thing that we've learned is that it's okay to be uncomfortable. It doesn't mean that you're doing something wrong, or you're not on the right path, like being uncomfortable is just going to happen because you're constantly growing. The other thing that's helped me is really focusing on the other person. So if you're uncomfortable talking to people, which I really was about like my business, I really took the time to figure out like, oh, how can I help them, and then when we would start talking, I could really focus on their answers and how I could truly help them that way. It wasn't about me at all. It was all about what can I do for them. So I think that's my golden nugget, it's just that it's okay to be uncomfortable and to really focus on your community versus how you feel.

I agree with Kalee. In fact, when you start to get too comfortable where you are,  you need to do something else to improve. there always needs to be stepping out of your comfort zone in order to grow as a person. And as a business owner, the other golden nugget I would give is, you're going to have to be consistent and determined, you can't let a little failure get you, you just have to learn from it and move on. And then you can talk to others in your field. People have done it, they've been there.

So ask those people that you admire that they are in your field or even not in your field, just somebody who knows a successful CEO or business owner, having a mentor you make up, you know, once a month meeting with them. Share with them something you've learned and vice versa. So I think that helps as well.

Gresham Harkless 10:53

Yeah, absolutely. Like, making sure you get out of your comfort zone and realizing you're not alone. I think sometimes when people start businesses, you think you're by yourself, but have an opportunity to kind of reach out to somebody that's been successful, maybe has, you know, kind of has that secret sauce, so to speak, and you can kind of pull from them or learn from them can also be great ways to teach yourself and propel yourself to be successful as well. So awesome CEO nuggets, I appreciate those.

One of the big and most exciting things that I get to ask is kind of like your definition of what it means to be a CEO. Obviously, we have different CEOs on the podcast and kind of get an opportunity for everyone to kind of define exactly what it means to them. So could you guys give me your definitions for what it means to you to be a CEO?

Kim & Kalee Sorey 11:34

Sure. I think that my definition of being a CEO is really being able to live a life of purpose, and knowing that you're spending your time the way that you were called to do. So for us it's healthy living and helping people find what's going to work for them and finding that confidence. But it really just depends on what your purpose is, and really going after it and knowing that it's going to be worth it, even if it's hard.

Kim & Kalee Sorey 11:59

What does a CEO mean to me? For me, it's not being a dictator over a company, but being a leader of the facilitator, showing others how to do what you do and be their own leader and grow their own way. Whether it's somebody or one of our coaches, or one of our clients, I want to be there so they can learn how to do this on their own, be independent and not dependent on me to figure something out for them. I want to give them the tools so that they can learn how to figure this out.

Gresham Harkless 12:31

That's perfect. I love those definitions. And yeah, it's definitely something that you need for everybody. So understanding what's your path and what your mission is, and what that means to you is exactly usually the first step to go. So, Kim and Kalee, I truly appreciate you for taking some time out of your schedule to speak with us.

I wanted to pass the mic to you guys one more time just to see if there's anything additional, you want to tell us as far as word of wisdom, piece of advice, or anything additional about your business, and then how people can get a hold of you.

Kim & Kalee Sorey 12:57

I think the biggest thing is just to know that you're never alone, whether your goal is a weight loss goal, your goal is a business goal, you can always reach out to somebody, whether it's in the same community or something different that you can just really relate to somebody. Always reach out because there's going to be somebody that has been there and can help you. Usually, everybody is very helpful, like nobody feels like they have to hold back information so make sure that you're you know, digging into some kind of community that's based around your goal.

If anybody wants to get a hold of us, we would love for you to check out our blog soreyfitness.com You can find us everywhere else like Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram,  Story Fitness, you'll see the two girls that look like and we would love to chat with you.
